100 megabits of Bluetooth in 2008

The Bluetooth Stakeholder Group on Tuesday laid the groundwork for the next-generation Bluetooth standard.

It is planned that the transmission speed will be a hundred times higher than the devices that can now be purchased, and in addition to the usual options (interconnection of mobile devices, support for wireless input devices, etc.), it will also be able to transmit audio and video materials. This will allow computers to be connected to even TVs and projectors, all without the usual cable clutter. Of course, despite the upgrade in technology, it will still be able to function as a low-power communication device, such as in mobile phones.

Transmitters operating on frequencies above 6 GHz will only have a short range of 10-15 meters and will perform functions other than Wi-Fi systems, so no clash between the two technologies is expected.

Intel, Microsoft, Sony and Nokia are just a few of the supporters of the new standard. The first hand-held devices (prototypes) are expected in the second quarter of 2007, and mass production will begin in early 2008.
