SMS message on the contact lens
The research center at the University of Ghent in Belgium has announced that a technology they have developed will allow certain information, such as mobile text messages, to be displayed directly on the contact lens.
The technology is based on a hemispherical, curved LCD display that can be embedded in a contact lens so you can project images directly in front of your eyes. This is a major step forward, as previous solutions have only been able to display a few pixels.
"Now that we've established the core technology, we can devote the next few years to developing real-world applications." said Prof. Herbert De Smet.
"This is not science fiction," said De Smet, the project's lead researcher, adding that commercial applications will be available within five years.
"This will never replace a cinema screen, but it can also be interesting for special applications that transmit images such as directions or text messages from our smartphones directly to our eyes," said De Smet.
The lenses can also be used for medical purposes, such as controlling light transmission to the retina in the event of damaged iris.
